Introduction and History

The 2019 Yamaha EXR, part of Yamaha’s WaveRunner lineup, made a splash in the personal watercraft world as a nimble, lightweight, and high-performance ski designed for those seeking speed and maneuverability. Released as an addition to the EX series, the EXR distinguishes itself from other models with enhanced power, a lightweight hull, and Yamaha’s NanoXcel 2 hull material—a composite that achieves both agility and speed without compromising durability.

Enthusiasts appreciate the EXR’s accessibility for beginners while delivering thrills for experienced riders. Yamaha crafted the EXR with an emphasis on a low weight-to-power ratio, giving it exceptional handling, quick acceleration, and high-speed performance.

Engine Details

Powering the 2019 Yamaha EXR is Yamaha’s impressive TR-1 High Output (HO) engine, a naturally aspirated, 1049cc, three-cylinder, four-stroke powerhouse that brings solid performance to the EXR lineup. Originally introduced with the EX series, the TR-1 HO engine quickly gained a reputation for its compact size and efficiency, making it a strong performer in a lightweight package. With a power output of around 110 hp, it gives the EXR a noticeable advantage over comparable models, delivering a punchy and thrilling experience on the water. The TR-1 HO’s design also stands out due to its fewer moving parts, which lowers the chances of component failures, streamlining maintenance without sacrificing reliability.

The engine’s electronic fuel injection (EFI) system is another highlight, providing the EXR with consistently smooth starts, efficient fuel usage, and more reliable overall performance. The (EFI) helps balance fuel delivery, optimizing power output while keeping fuel consumption manageable. This addition complements the TR-1 HO’s natural efficiency and contributes to making the EXR a well-rounded, powerful choice in Yamaha’s lineup. Known for its reliability, this engine design has successfully powered various Yamaha models, reinforcing the TR-1 HO’s reputation as a workhorse that performs well under various conditions.

A key element that sets the EXR apart from its predecessors is its top speed and aggressive acceleration. The engine’s higher horsepower output allows the EXR to achieve a top speed of around 54 mph, satisfying both thrill-seekers and speed enthusiasts.

To further enhance the EXR’s handling and responsiveness, Yamaha included a top-loader intake grate and a 40 mm pump extension. This combination improves the watercraft’s grip in tight turns and choppy water, helping it maintain stability while offering a fast, dynamic ride. Together, these features make the Yamaha EXR 2019 model a versatile option for riders who want a reliable, high-performance machine that handles both calm and slightly rougher waters with ease.

Primary Specifications and Equipment

With a lightweight and compact design, the 2019 Yamaha EXR has specifications and equipment aimed at maximizing performance and enjoyment. It includes a 13-gallon fuel tank, which, combined with the efficient TR-1 HO engine, ensures extended riding sessions.

Storage is limited but available in front compartments and under the seat, totaling just under 7 gallons, making it sufficient for essentials but not expansive. Key features include Yamaha’s RiDE dual throttle handle system, which simplifies reverse handling and improves braking, making the EXR user-friendly in both high and low-speed situations.

RiDE System

One of the standout features of the 2019 Yamaha EXR is its innovative RiDE system. The RiDE system is a dual-throttle system that simplifies docking and maneuvering in close quarters. With a second throttle lever on the left side of the handlebar, the RiDE system allows for intuitive pulls on the forward and reverse levers, making shifting between forward and reverse easy and effortless. Additionally, the RiDE system can be utilized at high speeds, providing rapid deceleration when necessary by dropping the reverse bucket into the forceful jet of water leaving the pump.

Hull Material and Design

The EXR features Yamaha’s NanoXcel 2 hull material, a high-tech composite designed to shave off weight without compromising strength. This innovation allows the EXR to weigh in at just around 540 pounds dry, making it significantly lighter than many other models in its class. NanoXcel 2 not only improves speed and agility but enhances handling on calm waters, where the EXR truly shines. While it manages moderate chop effectively, it is more at home on flat or mildly turbulent water, which allows riders to fully appreciate its maneuverability and quick turns.

What Riders are Saying about the 2019 Yamaha EXR

Riders frequently praise the 2019 Yamaha EXR for its light, responsive handling and its accessible power. Positive reviews highlight its compact size, allowing it to excel at quick maneuvers and offering a more exhilarating ride compared to heavier models. Additionally, the RiDE control system receives accolades for making docking and reversing easier. Some riders, however, note the limited storage and the lightweight hull, which can lead to a choppier ride in rough water. Overall, feedback celebrates the EXR as a fun, fast, and beginner-friendly choice with enough punch to keep experienced riders entertained.

Bow Compartment

The 2019 Yamaha EXR comes equipped with a rather shallow bow storage compartment, it lacks the height/ depth to store larger items. The picture below shows a Yamaha upgrade accessory that can be added to give you considerably more space for items like a small life jacket, extra gear, a towel, small soft sided cooler, and other larger items.

If you add all three upgraded storage accessories shown in this article, you will give the ski alot more acceptable storage. The Bow Storage Dry Bag Accessory and the extra deep glove box are the largest spaces on the EX models. I recommend adding the bow storage dry bag and the stern mounted bag at the very least to allow you to bring everything you need for a day on the water without sacrificing comfort or performance.

Oversize Glove Box

In addition to the bow compartment, the EXR features an oversize glove box for even more storage options. This glove box provides a secure and easily accessible place to store personal items such as keys, wallets, and phones. With this additional storage space, you can keep your valuables safe and within reach while enjoying your ride.

Dual Rearview Mirrors

Safety is always a top priority, and the Yamaha EXR is equipped with dual rear view mirrors to enhance visibility on the water. These mirrors provide a wide-angle view, allowing you to keep an eye on your surroundings at all times. Whether you’re navigating through heavy boat traffic or simply want to be aware of your surroundings, the dual rear view mirrors offer added peace of mind and safety.

Pull-Down Boarding Step

Getting on and off a personal watercraft can sometimes be challenging, especially for less experienced riders. The Yamaha EXR addresses this issue with its convenient pull-down boarding step. This step allows for easy access to the craft, making boarding and disembarking a breeze. Whether you’re at the dock or out in open water, the pull-down boarding step ensures a smooth and hassle-free experience for everyone.

The two-tone design adds a unique flair to the craft, making it stand out from the crowd.

Special Notes or Personal Experience

This ski was my absolute best bang for the buck favorite ski until the 2022 Yamaha Jet Blaster was released. When Yamaha added electric trim, upgraded the handlebar design and added Tail Foot chocks the Jet Blaster became my best bang for the buck favorite ski. Compare them both and tell me what you think.

Conclusion

The 2019 Yamaha EXR represents a perfect blend of speed, agility, and affordability. Its lightweight, durable NanoXcel 2 hull, paired with the powerful TR-1 High Output engine, offers an exhilarating ride without the bulk of larger models. Though limited in storage and best for flat-water conditions, the EXR is ideal for riders seeking a fast, responsive personal watercraft that delivers in all key areas.
